What are the psychological benefits of playing sports during the depresion?

The most common psychological advantage of playing sports is the increase of self-esteem. During exercise your body produces chemicals – endorphins. These substances interact with the receptors in the brain and thus reduce your perception of pain.

Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling, similar to those that occur after the adoption of morphine. For example, a condition that occurs after a good Jogging or any other physical activity, can be described as “euphoric”. This feeling is also called “runner’s high” that causes a rush of positive energy and a new positive Outlook on life.

The action of endorphins can be compared with the action of analgesics, which means they diminish the perception of pain. Their action can be defined as a sedative. They are produced in the brain, spinal cord and many other parts of the body and are released in response to a signal received from the brain chemicals – neurotransmitters. The nerve endings that attach to the endorphins, the same as under the action of pain relievers. However, unlike morphine, endorphins do not cause dependence or addiction.
